Habitat Tuateawa is a voluntary organization that has been in existence for over 20 years and many of the founding members are still active today!
Two years ago we became an Incorporated Society to be able to access more funding and expand the pest control area we organize.
Our vision is not only to help our birds and forest to flourish but to eventually reintroduce seabirds to our coastline.
What is the size of area under protection?
Originally we protected 300ha of our surrounding bush and settlement but with recent funding, have been able to expand and protect another 500ha.
What has been the biggest success of your group to date?
Not only have we got a very healthy birdlife and vibrant bush surrounding our settlement, we also have a loving, caring community, bound together by our communal work we do each year.
What is the biggest challenge facing your organisation at present
Our biggest challenges, like I know every voluntary group has, is the funding and aging volunteers.
Added to that, the reinfestation from surrounding, unprotected areas means there is no let-up, hence our desire to expand and link up with other pest control groups in our greater area.
If you wish to supply contact details for your group, this can be used as a call for volunteers or just to allow people to contact your organisation if they would like to know more.
